Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP)
Who would like a low-cost program that has been shown--with over 100,000 people--to improve health status and reduce ED visits and admissions? This Stanford University developed Class is delivered over six weeks, one day per week for two and a half hours. Collaborate with senior centers, churches, libraries, hospitals and other community partners, deliver community benefit, and improve health system performance. People with different chronic conditions attend the program together. Leader Training certifies health professionals and lay persons with chronic conditions as qualified to lead classes. Each Leader Trainee receives a detailed leader's manual, a copy of the textbook, and two relaxation audio tapes. Available in English or Spanish.
$2,500-$3,500 per class
$600-$1,500 per trainee for Leader Training, plus travel-related expenses
Cultural Competence Training for Health Professionals
Increase knowledge, enhance skills, change attitudes and improve service delivery. Based on national standards, this program is designed for social service and health care providers, support staff, human resources personnel, teachers and administrators. A highly qualified and dynamic trainer will bring the program to your people. Emphasizing CLAS (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Standards), Cultural Competency Training for Health Professionals can be modified in length from 2 to 8 hours. The essential elements of achieving cultural competence include:
- Valuing Diversity - Understand and respond to ethnic/cultural traditions and preferences. Promote programs that respect and incorporates cultural differences.
- Conducting a Self Assessment (Organizational or Individual) - Know ethnic/cultural characteristics of patients and staff. Evaluate quality of services provided to cultural/ethnic clients.
Managing the Dynamics of Difference - Acknowledge the influence of culture and tradition of clients and their response to services.
- Acquiring and Institutionalizing Cultural Knowledge (Cultural Competence/Interpreter Training) - Institutionalize policies to ensure that the ethnic/cultural needs of patients and staff are met.
- Adapting to the Diversity and Cultural Context of the Individuals and Communities Served - Include community partners and stakeholders in meaningful ways.
$750-$1,500, depending on length of training and number of trainees, plus travel-related expenses

Interpreter Training
Increasingly changing demographics in the Central Florida area, coupled with heightened federal guidelines regarding the provision of services to people with Limited-English Proficiency (LEP), have increased the challenges faced by health care and social services providers trying to provide quality health care to patients who speak limited English.
To address this issue, the Center for Health Futures offers interpreter training for bilingual staff. The course includes information and training on ethics, types and modes of interpreting, legal obligations of interpreters, cultural mediation, basic skills including pre-session preparation, introductions, positioning, register, tone, halting the session, note-taking, memory skills, closing the session, and much more.
